Sr. Theresa Marie Moore, PVMI, will share stories about Mother Tallon’s life and times, heroic virtue, and steps on the path to Canonization as a saint on Tuesday, May 8, from 7-8 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Hall, 1108 S Main St.
Servant of God Mother Mary Teresa Tallon moved to Indiana in 1887 at the age of nineteen to join the Sisters of the Holy Cross, spending 6 years at Notre Dame University and St. Mary’s College before teaching in a number of assignments across Indiana, Illinois, California, and New York. Inspired by a longing for a deeper prayer life and the opportunity to seek out the lost and forsaken of the Catholic Church, the Holy Spirit called her to begin a new Community of contemplative-missionary Sisters. During her twelve year journey to receive permission to start the new Community in New York City, she was assigned to Elkhart for two years (1913-1915) where she taught at St. Vincent de Paul school. In 1920, permission was given to begin the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate, which she guided for thirty-one years until her retirement.
Come and hear about her time in Indiana, especially in Elkhart, where she reached out to all the students, especially those who were ignored by others, and where she was encouraged by the Pastor, Father Francis Jansen as she encountered many trials in following God’s call. Her brave perseverance in the face of many obstacles is an example to all of us as we face trials in our own lives.
