Mariam Schmitz

Freelance Writer

Mariam Schmitz is a proud Catholic, a wife and a mother. She is originally from the Chicago area, and studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in broadcast journalism there, and worked in radio news for two years. As a newlywed in 1996, she moved to Fort Wayne with her husband as he began a new job. She began teaching communication as an adjunct faculty member at Ivy Tech Community College and then, a few years later, at Indiana University/Purdue University Fort Wayne. While teaching was wonderful, she was happy to become a stay-at-home parent in 2013 with the arrival of their fourth child. Time marched on, and as the baby became more independent she began part-time work again — this time as a freelance writer for Today’s Catholic. Shortly thereafter, she also began serving as producer of Redeemer Radio’s local program called “Truth in Charity with Bishop Rhoades.” For Mariam, the opportunity to use her journalism background for Catholic media is truly a dream come true.
