St. Mary Mother of God 175th Jubilee Mass and Celebration
10:45am-12:00am
Fort Wayne
St. Mary Mother of God celebrates its 175th Jubilee with a Mass and Luncheon on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2023. Mass begins at 10:45 a.m. with the luncheon following in the church hall.
St. Mary was founded in 1848 when 30 German families marched in procession from St. Augustine Catholic Church to the corner of Lafayette Street and Jefferson Boulevard to celebrate the creation of the new St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church. A larger brick church replaced the small frame church in 1859. That building was lost to a boiler explosion on January 13, 1886, which led to the construction of an even larger worship space dedicated in 1887. That structure served the parish, the neighborhood, and the city for 108 years until a tragic fire following a lightning strike on Sept. 2, 1993. The current church complex, dedicated on May 2, 1999, embraced the Faith in Action begun by the first families of St. Mary Mother of God parish, bearing witness beyond the church walls.
Throughout 2023, St. Mary has celebrated its 175th Jubilee with guest speakers, fellowship, worship and recommitment to putting Faith into Action.
