A Lenten Journey of Music
7:00pm-9:00pm
On the cusp of Holy Week, the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross will host a special Lenten worship event featuring a musical and narrated journey to the Passion of Saint John. The service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2026, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, on Saint Mary’s campus, Notre Dame, Indiana. It will also be livestreamed on the Church of Our Lady of Loretto YouTube channel.
The evening will feature The Passion According to Saint John, a musical setting by Steven C. Warner, founder of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. The composition is dedicated to Karen Schneider Kirner, Steve’s associate of more than 20 years, who served as associate director of the folk choir and is now the assistant director of Liturgy for the Sisters of the Holy Cross.
This prayerful and lively service will feature 35 members of the Church of Loretto Choir joined by 20 alumni of the Notre Dame Folk Choir. Nine instrumentalists, including those on violin, cello, clarinet, flute, organ and guitar, will accompany the combined ensemble. The audience, too, will be invited to join in shared song with the ensemble.
Blending narration and song, the concert will also highlight the global ministries of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Reflective texts and music will unfold alongside the Passion narrative, offering a witness to how Holy Cross sisters continue Christ’s ministry in their daily lives. Guests will be invited not only to contemplate the suffering and love revealed in the Passion of St. John but also to consider how they are called to embody Christ’s compassion and service in their daily lives.
