Keeley Vatican Lecture with Rev. Dr. Hans Zollner, SJ
5:00pm-6:30pm
Notre Dame
Cost: Free and open to all
Reverend Dr. Hans Zollner, SJ, will deliver the 2022 Keeley Vatican Lecture Tuesday, April 5, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Eck Visitors Center at the University of Notre Dame.
A native of Regensburg, Germany, Father Zollner is Ordinary Professor at the Institute of Psychology and President of the Center for Child Protection, both at the Pontifical Gregorian University. A theologian and licensed psychotherapist, Dr. Zollner is a leading expert and scholar on the prevention and healing of childhood sexual abuse who has spoken about the Church’s role in combating childhood sexual abuse in more than seventy nations. He has played a leading role in international meetings on this issue, including the “Towards Healing and Renewal” symposium on sexual abuse of minors (February 2012), the world congress “Child Dignity in the Digital World” (2017), and the summit on Child Protection in the Vatican (2019). In 2014, Pope Francis appointed Father Zollner to the new Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, reappointing him for a second term in 2018.
Generously supported by Terrence R. Keeley, the lecture is now in its second decade. It provides a way for the Nanovic Institute to deepen Notre Dame’s connection to the Holy See by bringing distinguished representatives from the Vatican to Notre Dame to explore questions involving Notre Dame’s Catholic mission. Each year’s lecturer is chosen by the Institute in close consultation with its Advisory Board and the Notre Dame administration.

Tenebrae service
8:00pm-9:00pm
Fort Wayne
Tenebrae, or Service of Shadows, was once part of the Church’s Divine Office during Holy Week. It was a service of psalms and readings. As the service progressed, the 15 candles on a special candelabrum (a “hearse”) would be progressively extinguished, until the last candle was removed from the sanctuary, leaving the church in darkness. The departure of the last candle was accompanied by a strepitus, a “great noise” that alluded to the earthquake when Jesus died, accomplished by the pounding of breviaries, hymnals, or stamping of feet.
We will do a modified version of the Tenebrae Service at Our Lady on Good Hope beginning at 8 p.m. on Good Friday. This is a beautiful opportunity to meditate upon the Word of God and to listen to sacred music as we commemorate the Passion of our Lord.

The Way of St. Joseph will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, wind its way along the River Walk, and eventually end up at St. Joseph Church, South Bend. There will be three other on-ramps along the way for families for whom the entire pilgrimage would be too taxing. The event will end with a prayer service, food and fellowship in the fenced-in parking lot and playground at St. Joseph parish. The event is free, but registration is strongly recommended.
