A triple conjunction of the moon, the planet Venus, and the bright star Regulus rises in the dawn sky above the steeple of St. Peter Parish in Fort Wayne on Friday morning, September 19. Celestial alignments such as this have been cited by the Church throughout history as reminders of God’s order and beauty in creation.
Stanley Cup Makes Surprise Visit to Students at St. Vincent School
The NHL’s championship trophy, the Stanley Cup, made a surprise appearance at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School in Fort Wayne on Thursday, September 18. P.J. Fenton, a scout for the NHL’s Florida Panthers, and his family live in Fort Wayne and attend St. Vincent, where their daughter is a sixth grader.

In June, the Panthers won their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship, knocking off the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 in a best-of-seven series. After a team wins the Stanley Cup, players and staff get a day to themselves with the cup. Last year, the Fenton family celebrated by eating ice cream from the top of the cup. This year, Fenton told Today’s Catholic that he wanted to surprise his daughter and the students of St. Vincent by bringing the cup to school.
St. Vincent students and staff had the opportunity to take pictures, touch, and even kiss the cup – but not lift it. Officials with the NHL Hall of Fame, who accompany the cup wherever it goes, explained to the students that there is a rich tradition in hockey that only players and staff who win the cup can lift it. (Even the officials charged with bringing the cup to the players and staff are not allowed to lift it.)
Once the Fenton family’s day with the Stanley Cup ended, it was scheduled to move on to the next Florida Panthers staff member. Ultimately, the trophy ends up back in the NHL Hall of Fame in Toronto, where it will wait for the next team to be crowned as NHL champion.
